Fourteen

“Kennedy.” Someone touched my arm. “I need to get you outside.”

Consciousness crept over me. I fought against it. I hurt, and if I moved, I’d hurt more. I wanted to pass out again, to ignore the world and the person hovering over me.

“I can carry you or you can walk.” My brain registered Christian’s low, firm voice. This wasn’t the first time I’d woken from an injury with him at my side. Except I’m not sure if Jared’s bite last month counted as a wound even if it had likely resulted in a similar amount of blood loss.

“No,” I muttered.

Christian smoothed back my sweat-dampened hair. My whole body was hot and achy. Even my skin hurt.

“You have a fever.” His hand was cool against my face. “Astrid made a poultice, but it won’t work in the Null.”

I opened my eyes. I was in my bed upstairs in the family residence. If Astrid had something that would heal my shoulder and make the pain go away, I wanted it, but the edge of the Null seemed so damn far away. “Why didn’t you leave me in the car?”

“Astrid needed time to gather some things, and you’re safer here. Come on.” He slipped his hand between my back and the mattress and lifted me into a sitting position.

My bedroom blurred and spun. My stomach threatened to empty itself. I gripped Christian’s forearm and held on tight, fighting the pain and the exhaustion and the black shadows that crept into my vision.

“Nope.” I tried to lay back down.

“Don’t—” He cut himself off; then he cut off my descent, scooping me up into his arms.

“Stop.” It hurt too much to struggle, to try to slip out of his hold. “Put me down.”

“No.”

“Seriously. I’m going to throw up.”

“Okay.”

“It’s not okay. I’m going to puke all over you.”

“I’m taking you downstairs.”

I wanted to protest again, but we were already out of the residency and halfway down the hall. I pressed my face against his shoulder, praying it steadied the world.

It didn’t.

We reached the stairs. Every step sent a lance of pain through my shoulder. Sweat beaded along my hairline. Nausea churned in my stomach. Just when I thought I was about to pass out, I heard a door swing open and felt the cool kiss of fresh air.

“Jesus, you look like shit,” Astrid said.

“Where do you want her?” Christian asked.

“Just put me down.” I pushed away from Christian. He allowed it, setting my feet to the ground. I think he intended to keep me standing, but I wiggled free and lay on the ground.

“I guess that works,” Astrid said.

The grass was itchy but cool against my face.

Astrid’s hand pressed against my forehead. “You’re too hot. Roll to your back. I need to get this poultice on the wound. Has she had any medicine?”

“Advil a couple of hours ago,” Christian said.

“Rotate it with Tylenol. Roll, Kennedy.”

I was still lying on my uninjured side. I let gravity pull me to my back, then held my breath, waiting for the new wave of pain to pass.
